Tamarron West is one of the newest communities on the west side, along FM 359 north of Fulshear. Almost every tree here was planted by a builder in the last few years, and nearly all of them are live oaks.

A young live oak needs very little work, but it needs the right work at the right time. Tree King is based a few miles north in Pattison and does this kind of pruning all over the new neighborhoods between Katy and Fulshear.

What a builder-planted live oak needs in its first years

One main trunk. Nursery live oaks usually arrive with two or three leaders competing at the top. Left alone they form a weak fork that splits years later. We pick the best leader and shorten the others.

Limbs at the right height. On a small lot the lowest limbs end up over the sidewalk, the driveway and the neighbor's fence. We raise the canopy gradually so the trunk keeps its strength.

Stakes, straps and mulch. Staking left on past the first year cuts into the bark. Mulch piled against the trunk rots it. Both are quick fixes when caught early.

Planting depth and water. A tree set too deep in heavy clay, on an irrigation schedule meant for grass, will sit there and sulk. We check the root flare and tell you what to change.

Frequently asked questions

Do you work in Tamarron West?

Yes. It is a short drive from our base in Pattison.

How soon after planting should a live oak be pruned?

Give it a year or two to root in, then start light structural pruning. Dead or broken branches can come off any time.

When is the best time to prune live oaks?

Late summer through winter. We avoid February through June when we can because that is when oak wilt spreads most easily, and we seal fresh cuts.
